By the Numbers: Petr Yan vs. Urijah Faber

Though his title shot wish has not yet come true, Peter Yan will have the opportunity to take on a legendary former champion. Urijah Faber is fresh off a TKO victory over Ricky Simon and will look to extend his winning streak to three when he steps in the cage with the surging Yan. Ahead of their collision at UFC 245 in Las Vegas, read about some numbers that define their respective careers.

Active winning streak

Before retiring on July 6, 2017, Faber beat Brad Pickett at UFC on Fox 22. He came out of retirement in 2019 and faced Ricky Simon at UFC Fight Night 55. Before those two victories, Faber suffered a loss to Jimmie Rivera, which makes for a two-fight winning run for the head of Team Alpha Male.

Yan, on the other hand, is on an impressive eight-fight winning streak. The streak started at ACB 41 - Path to Triumph on July 15, 2016, when he decisioned Ed Arthur, and it has continued up to his most recent bout, when he defeated the last man to beat Faber, Jimmie Rivera.

Octagon appearances

Yan has fought inside the Octagon only five times. He debuted on June 23, 2018, with a victory over Teruto Ishihara at UFC Fight Night 132. Since then he has fought Jin Soo Son, Douglas Silva de Andrade, John Dodson and Jimmie Rivera and he has beaten them all.

Meanwhile, Faber has been fighting in the Octagon since UFC 128, when he decisioned Eddie Wineland. Throughout his Ultimate Fighting Championship career, “The California Kid” has faced some of the biggest names at bantamweight and featherweight, including Dominick Cruz, Frankie Edgar and Renan Barao. He challenged for the UFC bantamweight title four times but always came up short.

Knockout rate

Five of Yan’s 13 victories came via KO or TKO, making for a 38 percent knockout rate. His UFC victims include Douglas Silva de Andrade and Teruto Ishihara. Meanwhile, the much more experienced Faber has starched 10 opponents, making for a 29 percent knockout rate. Before Simon, the last time he knocked someone out was on Jan. 20, 2007, at WEC 25, when he forced Joe Pearson to tap out following a series of punches and elbows.

Submission rate

Yan only has one submission on his resume, which translates to an eight percent submission rate. Faber, on the other hand, owns a 49 percent submission rate. The pride of Sacramento owns 17 victories by submission, six of which occurred in the UFC, against Francisco Rivera, Alex Caceres, Michael McDonald, Scott Jorgensen, Ivan Menjivar and Brian Bowles. Outside of the Octagon, he has submission wins over Dominick Cruz, Raphael Assuncao and Jens Pulver.

Common opponent:
Jimmie Rivera

In their UFC 238 fight, Yan almost finished Rivera, but in the end he had to settle for a unanimous decision as the durable American refused to go out. Rivera, however, led in significant strikes landed at 73-56. He also led Faber in the same department in their UFC 203 bout at 54-22, but against Faber he was able to use his striking to earn the decision win.
